Chopping wood is good exercise!

Seems back in the day (way back in 1899), teachers chopped wood as well as taught more than one subject. Average salaries in today's dollars were approximately $15,000. Schools were open roughly 135 days a year and students attended, on average, 86 days.

In a small town in Ohio, the school year in 1846 began on November 3rd and concluded April 17th. There were 112 students enrolled in the town's single school, but only a fraction of these showed up daily. Male teachers could expect $10 per month plus 100 pounds of iron. Female teachers earned $6 per month, no word on the iron. There were no grade levels.

Following the Civil War as America became more industrialized, the push for greater education gathered steam. By the 1870s, several high courts ruled in favor of taxes to support public education. In 1860, there were 40 public high schools in the U.S. By 1900, there were 6,005.
